1.
I went to the suburbs To see the divine I took a lot of pictures As I walked the power lines Everybody’s going to the same place I want to taste the seasons I sit at the airport lounge The moon is disappearing As we watch from the harbour bar Everybody’s going to the same place Everybody’s running from the same fate You gotta make a living You gotta reach toward the light I don’t want money I want the things that money buys Everybody’s going to the same place Everybody’s running from the same fate Everybody’s looking for the same thing Everybody’s going to the same place
2.
Red moon rising at the bar Deep sea diving of the heart Weak scenes reckon with the ways Wash hands, go back to the start It’s not the end, it’s just the end of this This isn’t death, it’s just a part of it Spent cheeks longing for a rest Reach for common ground to lay your head Speak lean, confidence an art Live clean, fingernails and bed It’s not the end, it’s just the end of this This isn’t death, it’s just a part of it
3.
Piece Of It 02:11
No I don't know anymore I’ve got one foot in And I've got one out the door Not going anywhere Just gotta weather the storm Don’t have to like it And if you can’t see the dawn It’s coming anyway There’s a little on your mind You know that I’ve seen the worst of it No I don't know anymore But I’ve got a question One that I can’t ignore ‘What’s gonna happen now?’ You know you’ve been here before Can’t shake the feeling You never really belong You’re not the only one Tell me that you wanna die You know that I’ve seen the worst of it Take a breath, you’re still alive I know that you want a piece of it
4.
Real Life 03:28
Been looking on from the side It’s almost as good as feeling alive But I’m just saving myself For when they call me up at three-quarter time I’m serving oranges now But I’m moving up as soon as I know how You gotta play it to win So I’m gonna try my hand at shooting something Somebody save me a piece of that real life Somebody save me one of those good times Is it a trick of the light? Feels so much better when I go outside Have I been wasting my time? My heart is beating, I’d say that’s real life. Somebody save me a piece of that real life Somebody save me one of those good times Wake up, stay in bed Something’s got you by the leg Laid back, bit too far Gotta find a way back to the start Somebody save me a piece of that real life Somebody save me one of those good times
5.
If the world is gonna burn Then let it be done We could go on talking About how it’s gonna turn It's not important I wanna be everything But I just can’t get started And I could talk for years Both honest and half-hearted but It's not important I know you well and you are dying It's just as well you’ve still got time Stay where you are and make a plan You better run on my command
6.
I was uncomfortably happy I was uncomfortably miserable Just when you think you can hack it Another rock comes rolling down the hill (Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo) I wasn’t much of a soldier Wasn’t any better as a diplomat And now I think that I’m older But I can hear a child trying to sing me back Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna stay the same Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna leave a trace I was uncomfortably happy I was uncomfortably miserable Just when you think that you’re back in Another rat comes running for the kill I wanted one in a million I just got a sentence and a bitter pill And if you think you won’t take it There’s a million people saying that you will Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna stay the same Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna leave a trace But you gonna do it anyway? Doesn’t really matter anyway Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna stay the same Nothing’s gonna go your way Nothings gonna leave a trace (Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo)
7.
Down here putting out the same old fires You’re still spitting out the party line I don’t know why it would be different this time It’s just as well we’ve got a rocket to ride We’re still paying off our old adventures They’ll be mining Mariana trenches I don’t why it would be better this time It’s just as well we’ve got a rocket in the sky It’s only natural that we should seed and bloom I don’t know why, I don't know why You’ve been skimming all the cream off nicely Strip the fat and leave the bones out nightly It’s no surprise to see it so unsightly It’s just as well we’ve got a big ship It’s only natural that we should seed and bloom I don’t know why, I don't know why
8.
Killed A Fly 01:57
I killed a fly a hundred times It’s lived a hundred and one lives I’d slay the beast if I had to do it It’s an ugly deed, but there’s nothing to it Yeah, I’d slay the beast if I had to eat And nothing’s gonna change And I’m in love with that I’m making peace with the witch in me And the one without is gonna let me be Yeah, I’m making peace with the witch in me I’m making peace with everything And nothing's gonna change and I’m in love with you
9.
Take It Back 03:51
I lock the doors in a giant house I talk to walls and they don’t talk back It's a funny little barnyard dance You got the money but you missed your chance Take it back Did you ever have it anyway? I built the monument, I turned the taps I watch the water drain out of the tank I keep the seeds all in a sack And beg the garden to take me back Take it back Did you ever have it anyway? Take it back Was it ever yours anyway? This is the fruit to which you gave your life This is the story that you tell your child This is the soil razed, your mother’s salt This is the flower’s grave, its sacrifice Take it back Did you ever have it anyway? Take it back Was it ever yours anyway?

Interlude 00:49

The Place 03:51
This is the place where you were made Three-foot babe, fell into the lake This is the place, afraid of the waves Sea-sick days, nothing to complain of Holy water, never had a preacher Can’t be saved, ‘til your body breaks Holy ocean, nothing could be deeper Love that’s made when you go away Hell’s a one way track Heaven’s coming back This is the way you had to be brave Two front teeth bloody up the concrete This is the way you learned to behave Two-step dance, feel your body change Hell’s a heart- attack Heaven’s coming back Hell’s a one way track Heaven’s coming back

about

Real Life’ is the result of Melbourne singer songwriter Jess Locke trying to make sense of a world that feels more and more unreal. Some parts of the album simply expressions of despair at a world that feels more and more dystopian. Writing this record, Locke found herself thinking a lot about what it means to live when you know that one day you will die, not just individually, but as a species, as a planet. But as much as our impermanence is very much a fact, it is also a fantasy, some theoretical, future event. So while it’s quite a heavy topic, a lot of the album is a process of returning to the present moment, realising that it’s the only thing that’s real and that the only purpose in a life that will one day end is to experience it, and that’s quite liberating on a personal level. Music is possibly one of the most effective tools for grounding yourself in the present and, in making this record, Locke found that, along with the darkness, she found moments of revelation - an escape from the fantasy of what life could be into the reality of what it is.
